Leaks in the water distribution pipeline have prompted PDAM Banyumas to speak up regarding the issue, as reported by Tribun Banyumas in the following statement:
"PDAM Banyumas Regulation: Water leaks after the meter are the customer's responsibility"
— Tribun Banyumas, June 10, 2025
This report highlights the fact that many customers still don’t fully understand the boundaries of PDAM’s responsibility in the water distribution system. It also emphasizes that any leakage that occurs after the water passes through the meter is considered the customer’s personal responsibility.
This reflects a common issue in water usage when damage occurs in the pipeline, such as a water pipe leak, loose or broken fittings, or even more harmful cases like water theft. Incidents like these often lead to unexpectedly high bills at the end of the month without a clear cause, and many customers end up feeling disadvantaged by PDAM.
Although by regulation this issue may not be PDAM’s obligation, it still negatively impacts the reputation and public trust in PDAM. When damage or any loss-causing event happens to the customer, it's not uncommon for the customer to blame PDAM as the water service provider in the area.
Today, automated long-range water meter reading technology (known as Automated Meter Reading/AMR) using LoRaWAN is now available in Indonesia and could be the solution for PDAM to improve the efficiency of water meter operations. By using Smart Water Meters and Non-Magnetic Water Sensors available from PT IoT Kreasi Indonesia, PDAM can now monitor customer water usage patterns in real time without having to perform door-to-door meter checks and can also measure water flow rates. By applying this technology, PDAM can also receive alerts about abnormal water flow and anticipate possible leaks without needing to visit the location directly, with consumption data sent accurately according to the desired time interval.
Utilizing smart solutions in building PDAM's service infrastructure can foster greater customer and public trust. By using IoT-based smart water meters, PDAM can demonstrate accurate usage records and transparency in water consumption, while also preventing losses that may affect both the provider and the customer.
